Children of the Kingdom is Centipede Press's first entirely letterpress-printed book. The paper used is called Biblio, sourced from Atlantic Papers. Vladimir Zimakov provided linocuts for the book and he previously worked on Centipede Press's Something Wicked This Way Comes. Only 100 copies were made, primarily for subscribers and early supporters, making it a highly sought-after edition. Children of the Kingdom was first published by Viking Press in the anthology Dark Forces: New Stories of Suspense and Supernatural Horror. Set in 1977 New York City, the story paints a grim picture of urban life filled with poverty, fear, crime, and racial tensions. During the infamous 1977 blackout, the worm-like creatures emerge from New York's abandoned subway lines, committing horrific atrocities. The story is distinctly Lovecraftian, with themes and settings reminiscent of Lovecraft's work, including a reference to creatures called Mi-go. Klein's characterization and dialogue are exceptional, making the story as much character-driven as plot-driven.
